D.E.S.K. = Designing Environments
for Successful
Kids

D.E.S.K.
Design, Contributions and Ideas from:
Penny Reed, Jill Gierach, Paula Walser, Lana Sheets, Judi Cumley, Kelly
Jo Lynch,
Mary Wirkus, Shelly Weingarten. Julie Maro
Designing Environments for Successful Kids (D.E.S.K.) is a concept that
originated with members of the Wisconsin Assistive Technology Initiative
staff. Their ideas eventually were transformed into a Resource Manual
and a series of Make-it, Take-It workshops presented throughout Wisconsin.
Each D.E.S.K. workshop revolves around a different theme. The purpose
of this page is to provide web resources corresponding to these themes.
D.E.S.K. Hooked on Fishing
Designed by: Paula Walser, Jill Gierach & Shelly Weingarten

This "Color Me StoryBook"
fish book is available through PaperWork
Literacy. It utilizes white figures on a black background making
coloring experiences "successful" particularly for children who experience
fine motor struggles.

Five Little Monsters
Based on the book Five Little Monsters
Available from Creative
Teaching Press

Each participant received a copy of the Big Book version of Five Little
Monsters. During the day-long workshop, participants made props and
brainstormed extension activities.
Props included the following:
Tree:
A tree for
the monster props to swing from. The tree was shape was cut out of
foam core board (available at WalMart and other similar stores).
The leaves portion was made by hot gluing green velcro sensitive material
(available from EarlyChildhood.com)
to the top of the tree. Tongue depressors were hot glued to the foam
core to form the trunk. The "rope" was made from a piece of string
cut from a mop head (cheaper than buying rope :)!). The tree was
mounted to a magazine holder (purchased at WalMart for under $3.00) which
could also be used to house a smaller version of the book as well as props
and/or simple voice output systems. (Sophie the cat was not included
:))
Gloves:
Velcro sensitive gloves were purchased through EarlyChildhood.com.
The numbers were cut from "One-wrap" (EarlyChildhood.com) and could be
used when counting the monsters. For children who were not yet counting,
the scanned versions of the monsters could be used for matching and story
participation activities (e.g. Which monster fell from the tree now?).
